Compost Toilets
Empowering others to safely and responsibly manage their humanure
When the Christchurch earthquakes struck in 2011/12, we joined with a team of people from the permaculture community to form 'RELIEVE - compost toilets for community resilience'.
Relieve is an association of experienced designers, builders and users of composting toilets. As a group, we provided information and support to the people in Christchurch who were doing without their usual sewerage systems. We have also worked with civil defence to test composting toilets as part of an emergency response system.
Since then we have continued with this work program, giving many composting toilet workshops, helping to set up and manage composting toilets at festivals and large events, and making and selling simple box composting toilets from Greg's workshop. We are proponents of the simple methods described by Joe Jenkins in his book The Humanure Handbook.
We have also featured in Happen Films' short documentary on composting toilets.
and occasionally take on an advocacy role when composting toilets come up in public discussions - like this little chat Lisa had with Jesse Mulligan on Radio NZ
